Black & Red Doe Run Classic at Herculaneum             By Lee Richardson

Another Friday night, another tournament championship night in Jefferson County. On the heels of the Rolla Duke Herbert tournament played the week before, this time it was the girls’ turn to showcase some fine local teams and talent. Played from December 6-10 at Herculaneum High School, the final night of the Black & Red Doe Run Classic featured some very competitive games and a championship with an epic ending. Ray Halbrook, Scott Latta, and Lee Richardson were there for Live Stream STL to call the action. Here’s how it went:

Championship Game

North County 63, Lutheran South 61

Two fine local girls basketball programs faced off and delivered an outstanding championship game. The North County Raiders raced out to a big 21-9 lead at the end of the first quarter, led by their outstanding junior point guard Paris Larkin who scored 12 in that frame. But the Lutheran South Lancers wouldn’t go away. Several key buckets by sophomore guard Chloe Eggerding kept them within striking distance as they went to half down 34-29. A nip and tuck second half featured inside scoring from Raider senior post Kamryn Winch dueling with key buckets from Lancer guards Amy Ceko, Sophia Horrell, and Katelynn Karsten. The Lancers also used heavy pressure to force 24 North County turnovers to help assist the comeback. However, with seconds remaining in a tie game, Lutheran South tried to feed a cutting player, but North County’s Emma Gaugel stole the pass and fed Larkin. Larkin drove the entire length of the court and hit a tough runner off the glass with barely a second remaining on the clock for the exciting two-point victory and tournament championship.

Tournament MVP Winch led all scorers with 25 points while Larkin dropped 23. For the Lancers, Eggerding led them with 16 and Eggerding and Ceko both had 11. North County had defeated Pacific 51-32 in the first round, and Notre Dame 61-45 in the semifinals. Lutheran South beat Crystal City 69-12 in the first round, and then got by Herculaneum 66-44 in the semifinals.

3rd Place Game

Notre Dame 43, Herculaneum 30

It was a tale of two halves in the third-place game. In a grind-it-out first half, the Blackcats took a 17-11 lead into the halftime locker room on the back of some great defense and limiting Notre Dame sharpshooter Lillie Weber. However, after halftime, Herculaneum struggled to find offense while Weber got hot behind the three-point line. Weber would end up with 15 points, helped by 14 points from Teresa Laramie who kept the Rebels in the game until Weber got going. For Herculaneum, senior post Macey Pilliard scored 15 points while battling foul trouble, but the Blackcats did not have any other double-figure scorers. 18 turnovers and a lack of outside shooting plagued the Blackcats, as they went 0-10 behind the 3-point line, compared to 5-13 behind the arc for Notre Dame, representing the difference in what was otherwise a closely contested defensive struggle.

Notre Dame defeated St. Pius X 44-41 in the first round before falling to North County in the semis. Herculaneum beat Grandview 40-34 in the first round, then lost to Lutheran South in the semifinals.
