Live Stream STL was on hand Friday, December 3rd for the final night of action at the 16th edition of the Rolla “Duke” Herbert basketball tournament, played at the Arvel B. Popp gymnasium on the campus of Crystal City High School. We covered the final two games of the evening. Here’s a quick recap:
Seckman 81, Herculaneum 49
In their first year of participation in this tournament, the Seckman Jaguars defeated the Herculaneum Blackcats to claim the first-place trophy. Seckman had four players in double figures led by reserve R.J. Becker with 14, and also got a strong game off the bench from sophomore guard Coljn Debold who scored 11 points, and had several highlight-reel assists and dynamic finishes. Senior starting guard Riley Bradford scored 12 including some impressive early shooting, and athletic swingman Anthony Westervelt also had 12.
The first quarter provided plenty of entertainment, including a fast break dunk by Herculaneum’s 6-3 senior Dallin Fuller off a pretty feed from his point guard, Gabe Watkins. But as the first half went on, Seckman continued to pressure and kept the game speed at a pace that made it difficult for the Blackcats to contend with. Despite 16 points for Watkins and 11 for Fuller, Herculaneum committed 23 turnovers which led to too many easy transition baskets for the Jaguars.
The Class 6 Seckman team, the biggest school in the field, defeated Crystal City 87-41 in the first round of the tournament, and followed that up with a 63-55 victory over Saxony Lutheran in the semis. Herculaneum defeated Jefferson 65-35 in the first round and got a nice win over top-seed St. Vincent 48-44 in the semifinals.
Seckman starts the year 3-0 and will move on to face some tough competition in the Gene Steighorst tournament at Hillsboro from December 6-11 where they are the 5-seed and face an improved Hillsboro squad in the first round. Herculaneum now stands 3-1 early in the season and faces a tough test against a quality Kingston team on December 14th.
Senior guard Nate White of Seckman, along with Fuller and Watkins, made the 2021 Rolla Duke Herbert All-Tournament team.
3rd Place Game
Saxony Lutheran 62, St. Vincent 42
Senior Wilson Lodge scored 10 points and pulled down 9 rebounds as the tourney’s 2-seed took third with an impressive win over 1-seed St. Vincent. Lodge had tons of hustle plays including blocked shots, deflections, and general physicality that proved difficult for the St. Vincent interior players to combat. Lodge would be named the tournament’s MVP. He was joined in double figure scoring by William Eldridge with 16, Luke Eggemeyer off the bench with 14, and John Hartmann with 11 points.
Saxony Lutheran beat the St. Louis Patriots 86-30 in the opening round before falling to Seckman in the semifinals. St. Vincent opened their tournament action with a 65-19 win against Grandview before losing a tight game to Herculaneum in the semifinals. The Indians’ senior guard Evan DeWilde scored 10 points in the losing effort, but was also named to the All-Tournament team. Saxony opens the season with a 2-1 record while St. Vincent starts off 1-2.
5th Place Game
