As One Streak Ends, Another Begins
On Thursday, April 7th, the Vikings hosted Mineral Area College for 2 games on a very blustery day in Hillsboro. Haile Farris took the rubber in game 1 and pitched 6 efficient innings as the Jefferson beat Mineral Area 9-1. The sophomore right-hander gave up no earned runs and struck out 9 while walking 3 Cardinal hitters. The Viking batters got things started in the 2nd inning. Kennedy Kohler stroked a 1-out single and stole 2nd base. Lindsey Brandt then got a 3-2 pitch to her liking and laced a single, scoring Kohler. Brandt would score on a sacrifice by Jenna Roth for the 2nd run of the inning. Up next was Jenna’s sister Sarah Roth, who knocked a base hit to put 1 on with 2 out. The next batter was Riley Eagan. “Big Mamma”, as her teammates call her, belted a 2-run homer to increase the lead to 4 runs. The Vikes would tack 3 more runs on in the next inning. Kiersten Nixon coaxed a 1-out walk in the bottom of the 3rd frame. To the plate came Bailey Shuman and she got her 1st hit of the day, to put runners on the corners. Next came Kennedy Kohler and she smacked a double to the wall which scored Nixon, but Shuman was thrown out at the plate. With 2 outs, Lindsey Brandt lifted a towering, 2-run homer to left, making the score 7-0. Neither team would score again until the 6th inning. In the top of the frame, the Cardinals broke up the shutout with a run courtesy of a Viking error. Jefferson would end the game in their half of the frame. Jenna Roth notched a 1-out base hit. Sister Sarah moved her to 2nd with a hit of her own. With 2 aboard, Riley Eagan Smacked a double that scored Jenna Roth. With runners at 2nd and 3rd, it was Dani Lindsey’s turn to get in on the fun. Lindsey stroked a single, scoring Sarah Roth and ending the game a 9-1.
Riley Eagan was 3 for 4 in the game with a home run, 3 RBI, and 1 run scored. Lindsey Brandt was 2 for 3 with 3 RBI and 2 runs scored. Sarah Roth, Dani Lindsey, and Kennedy Kohler all notched multiple hits in the game.
In game 2, Kiersten Nixon found herself locked in a pitcher’s duel, but she was up to the challenge. Nixon twirled 7 innings of shutout softball, giving up only 2 hits while striking out 15 Cardinals while walking three. Her teammates scratched across 3 runs for a series sweep on the day. Jefferson got on the board early as Riley Eagan hit her 2nd home run of the day, this time a solo shot. In the bottom of the 2nd inning, Lindsey Brandt and Jenna Roth reached base for Sarah Roth, and she doubled both runners home to make the score 3-0. Neither team would score the rest of the game as they braved the raw and windy conditions. Sarah Roth’s 2 RBI double and Riley Eagan’s home run were the hitting highlights of the game.
On Sunday (10th) the Vikings headed to Poplar Bluff to face the Three Rivers Raiders. It was a clash of two top-20 teams and Region 16 rivals. The Raiders got the better of the Vikings in game 1, shutting out Jeffco 8-0, and snapping the winning streak at 20 games. Haile Farris was in the circle for game 1 and pitched admirably, going 5 innings and giving up 4 earned runs on 6 hits. She struck out 7 while walking only 2 Raiders. Ali Cook pitched the 6th inning and gave up the final 3 runs, ending the game early. Dani Lindsey and Kennedy Kohler managed the only 2 hits in the game for Jefferson.
Jefferson bounced back in game 2. The bats came alive as the Vikings pounded out 17 hits on the way to a 19-8 victory, their biggest offensive output of the season. Dani Lindsey got the ball rolling in the 1st inning with a 1-out triple. She scored on a Kiersten Nixon sac-fly and gave Jeffco a 1-0 lead. Three Rivers answered with a run of their own in their half of the frame and plated another in the bottom of the 3rd to take the lead. In the Viking’s 4th they would send 9 batters to the plate, scoring 5 times. After a leadoff walk to Bailey Shuman, Lindsey Brandt, and Jenna Roth all reached base via singles. There was 1 out when Sarah Roth came to the plate. Roth cleared the bases with a double and the Vikings regained the lead. Next up was Dani Lindsey, who singled home Sarah Roth. After Kiersten Nixon drew a walk, Tara Haag stroked a base hit scoring Lindsey to make the score 6-2, Jefferson. The Raiders got 2 runs back in the 4th inning before the Vikings went back to work in the 5th with the help of some 2-out magic. Lindsey Brandt led off the inning by being hit by a pitch. She moved to 2nd base after Torri Hinnah walked. The next 2 Vikings made outs and it was Dani Lindsey’s turn at bat. Lindsey smacked another team-leading double, scoring 2 runs. Next came Kiersten Nixon and a single off her bat plated another run. Jefferson had scored 3 times and pushed the lead to 9-4. But Three Rivers fought back, getting 3 runs in their half of the inning to make the score 9-7. The Lady Vikings needed to crank up their bats once again. In the top of the 6th, Brant and Hinnah both worked walks to put 2 aboard. Jenna Roth sacrificed both runners to 2nd and 3rd. Sister Sarah Roth proceeded to walk, loading the bases for Dani Lindsey. Lindsey smacked a single, her 4th hit of the game, and 1 run scored. Kiersten Nixon followed with a fielder’s choice, which plated another run. With 1 on and 2 out, Tara Haag got in on the fun. The Sophomore catcher belted a 2-run homer, expanding the Vikings' lead to 14-7. After being shut out in game 1, a flood of hits continued to pour out of the Viking bats in game 2. Lindsey Brandt singled with 1 out in the 7th, followed by a Torri Hinnah base knock that put 2 runners on. With 2 outs, Sarah Roth smashed a double, scoring Brandt and Hinnah. Dani Lindsey followed with a base hit, scoring Roth. The final blow came from the bat of Kiersten Nixon. She crushed an 0-2 pitch for a 2-run, opposite-field dinger that gave Jefferson their final 2 runs. The Raiders would score 1 in the bottom of the 7th, but Nixon got the final out and secured the 19-8 victory. Dani Lindsey had a huge game at the plate. The sophomore slugger went 5 for 5 with a walk, 5 RBI, and 5 runs scored. She also doubled twice adding to her team-leading total of 14. Sarah Roth finished the game 3-5 with a walk, 4 RBI, and 2 runs scored. Tara Haag was also 3-5 with a walk. She had 3 RBI and 1 run scored. Kiersten Nixon helped herself at the plate, going 2 for 5 with a walk, 5 RBI, and 1 run scored. Lindsey Brandt was 2 for 3 with 4 runs scored. Nixon pitched a complete game for the Vikes, giving up 7 earned runs on 8 hits. She struck out 6 while walking 3 Raiders.
Jefferson is now at 27-4 on the season. They will be back in action this Thursday at home as they host Three Rivers for 2 games starting at 2 PM.
